Another Utah food company dives into ‘Shark Tank’

On Friday, April 4, another Utah food business will dive into “Shark Tank.”

This time Kodiak Cakes, a Utah-based company specializing in flapjack and waffle mixes, will be on the reality television series, which airs on ABC/Ch. 4 at 8 p.m.

The owners of Kodiak Cakes started their business by selling hotcake mix in brown paper bags to neighbors. Today, Kodiak products are available in more than 7,000 retailers nationwide.

Three weeks ago, Pat Crowley, the owner of Chapul Bars, a Utah company that makes high-protein bars out of cricket flour, was on “Shark Tank.” The show gives aspiring entrepreneurs a chance to pitch their business ideas to a panel of potential investors, including Mark Cuban, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, and Lori Greiner, the “Queen of QVC.

During the episode, which aired March 21, Crowley accepted Mark Cuban’s offer of $50,000 in return for 15 percent of the profits.

“Things went very well for us,” Crowley said. “We began Chapul in 2012 as a way to kickstart the insect-based food industry, and being able to voice our mission to 8 million viewers was a milestone achievement for us.”

Making it on “Shark Tank” is difficult. Each year, producers receive 37,000 applications and only 150 companies are chosen to pitch. From there, only a portion of the filmed shows actually air.
