The LDS Church has agreed to work with the Utah Region of the American Red Cross to try to provide more than 200 volunteers throughout the Beehive State.

"We are so excited to have the opportunity to further strengthen our partnership with the LDS Church," Heidi Ruster, Red Cross regional CEO, said in a statement. "The tasks and number of the volunteers will vary in locations throughout the state."

Ruster met with Gérald Caussé, a counselor in the Utah-based faith's Presiding Bishopric who offered the church's support and a check for $60,000 to support the Red Cross disaster preparedness and response programs in the state.

The volunteer initiative is a pilot program in Utah, the Red Cross said in a news release, but is expected to be "a model for the entire nation."

The two groups have collaborated on hundreds of projects since 1987.
