Educational pub crawls showcase Utah’s beer history

Learn a little about Utah beer history while sipping a brew at one of Utah’s well-known watering holes during The Utah Heritage Foundation’s popular Historic Pub Crawls.

The 2014 Thirst Fursday series kicks off April 3 at 6 p.m. in Salt Lake City’s Exchange Place business district. Docents will discuss Samuel Newhouse, a force in 1910 behind the Newhouse and Boston buildings, which anchor this part of the city.

The pub crawls continue on the first Thursday of every month through December, with visits to different pubs and bars throughout the city.

Despite Utah’s teetotaling reputation, beer is part of its history as mining and railroad booms brought immigrants and their well-established drinking habits to the state.

“It is said that beer was a staple of most miners’ diet due to the high caloric intake they needed to sustain energy during their 12-hour shifts,” said Kirk Huffaker, executive director of Utah Heritage Foundation. “We share these stories and many more on the tour.”

The meeting location is provided with a paid registration of $20, or $15 for foundation members. Participants also get a pint beer glass and color brochure.

Historic pub tours may be arranged for private groups of at least 10 or more people if scheduled and paid for in advance.
