The Mountain West Conference unveiled its all-conference teams Monday, with two Aggies getting recognition.

Jarred Shaw and Spencer Butterfield earned all-Mountain West honorable mention for Utah State. Those were the only two honors for the Aggies, who finished 7-11 in conference play in their first season in the league.

San Diego State, which finished atop the standings, got many of the top honors. Senior guard Xavier Thames was the Mountain West Player of the Year, Steve Fisher was the Coach of the Year, senior forward Josh Davis was the Newcomer of the Year, and Dwayne Polee Jr. was the Sixth Man of the Year.

Rounding out individual awards were UNLV’s Khem Birch as the Defensive Player of the Year, and Fresno State’s Paul Watson as the Freshman of the Year.

The all-Mountain West first team was rounded out by New Mexico’s Cameron Bairstow and Kendall Williams, Nevada’s Deonte Burton, and Wyoming’s Larry Nance.

Shaw led Utah State in scoring and rebounding for the season, averaging 14.4 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. His inside presence helped Utah State win several games: The Aggies were 6-1 in conference play when he got a double-double.

Butterfield was second on the team in scoring, averaging 13.3 points per game and chipping in 6.2 rebounds per game. He led the Mountain West in 3-point percentage, shooting 47.5 percent from beyond the arc. He also led the team with 19 steals.

Both Butterfield and Shaw were all-WAC second team honorees last season.

Noticeably absent from postseason honors was Preston Medlin, who averaged 12.6 points per game and was third in the Mountain West with 4.2 assists per game while carrying a 3.0 assist-to-turnover ratio.
