Fans of Handel’s “Messiah” will shout “hallelujah” to this news:

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square will perform, possibly for the first time, the legendary oratorio in its entirety this Easter season.

Two concerts — one on Good Friday on April 18 and one the next night — will take place at the historic Tabernacle in downtown Salt Lake City, the LDS Church announced Friday.

Both shows will be at 7:30 p.m.

“We are pleased to present Handel’s masterwork, especially on the Easter weekend,” choir director Mack Wilberg said in a news release.

“ ‘Messiah’ is most often associated with Christmas, but it was originally an Easter offering when it debuted in the Musick Hall in Dublin on April 13, 1742,” the release noted. “Choir President Ron Jarrett hopes the choir’s Easter concert will familiarize listeners with the entire oratorio, which tells the story of Christ’s life in three sections, from his birth to his death and eventual redemption.”

Registration for free tickets to the concerts will begin March 11 at lds.org/events or by calling 801-570-0080.
