Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune West Valley police investigate an auto pedestrian accident on 3500 South and Redwood Road in West Valley City, Monday, March 3, 2014.

A woman was seriously hurt after a semi-truck driver hit her while she was crossing a West Valley City street.

About 1:40 p.m., the 52-year-old woman was crossing at 3500 S. Redwood Road (1700 West) when the truck hit her, said West Valley City Deputy Police Chief Mike Powell. She had a signal to cross and was in the crosswalk, though the northbound truck, turning east onto 3500 South, also had a green light, Powell said.

The truck came to a stop a short distance away.

The woman was taken to the hospital with serious leg and head injuries. She underwent surgery Monday afternoon and was expected to recover, Powell said.

Police plan to screen charges against the 49-year-old truck driver for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

The police investigation shut down the eastbound lanes, as well as the westbound-to-southbound turn lane, according to the Utah Department of Transportation. All of the lanes reopened after about two hours.
