Utah Valley holds off Texas-Pan American
Orem • Ben Aird had nine points, 13 rebounds and a season high five blocks as Utah Valley State slipped past Texas-Pam American 45-42 Saturday night.
Shaquille Boga hit a 3-pointer with 2:54 left to pull Texas-Pan American within 42-40. Aird made a free throw then Lauri Toivonen answered with a layup to cut the Wolverines' lead to 43-42 with 20 seconds left. Holton Hunsaker made two free throws to seal the victory for Utah Valley.
The Wolverines (18-10, 12-3 WAC) clinched at least a share of the conference regular season title.
Montana 82, SUU 54 • In Missoula, Kareem Jamar had 25 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists against the Thunderbirds (1-26, 0-18), who made just 18 of their 54 shots.
BYU 71 , San Diego 58 • In Provo, Jennifer Hamson scored 21 points on senior night to help the Cougars (24-5, 14-4) secure a No. 2 seed in the West Coast Conference tournament in Las Vegas, which begins Thursday.
SUU 70, Montana State 60 • In Cedar City, Marquelle Funk tallied 11 points and 12 rebounds to help the Thunderbirds (19-8, 13-5) remain in contention for the Big Sky regular season title.
Texas-Pan American 55, Utah Valley 45 • In Edinburg, Texas, the Wolverines (7-21, 4-11) scored the fewest points all season, had its three-game winning streak snapped and will be the seventh seed at the Western Athletic Conference tournament, which begins March 12 in Las Vegas.
Weber State 74, Northern Arizona 73 • In Flagstaff, Ariz., Kalie Matthews made a free throw with less than a second remaining to cap a 17-3 run to end the game for the Wildcats (7-20, 3-15 Big Sky Conference).
BYU 3, Pepperdine 0 • Taylor Sander smashed 18 kills and blocked six shots to lead the No. 2 Cougars (12-3, 12-1 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) to their season-best sixth straight win.
