Prep hockey: Viewmont defeats Park City 3-2 for state title
It had been 36 years since Viewmont won the Utah high school hockey championship.
After getting close the last two seasons, taking second in the state, both years, the Vikings broke the title drought Friday by defeating Park City 3-2 at the Salt Lake City Sports Complex.
"The last thing we did before we came here was stood in front of the banner at the Bountiful Rec Center and looked up there and it said, '1978.' Bob Shegrud, one of my assistant coaches, played in that game," said Viewmont coach Roger Barrus. "Then our boys committed to come out and whatever it took to win."
With the championship on the line, both teams let the puck fly. Park City took 37 shots on goal to just 22 for Viewmont. As each shot flew, you could hear the crowd gasp on the edge of their seats.
Trailing 2-1 in the third period, it looked as though the Vikings would come up short again. Just in the nick of time, Alex Barrus came through with a goal with 5.2 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game..
"My own son, I cannot be more proud, but at the end there, that was a whole team effort," said Coach Barrus.
The drama lasted into overtime when Barrus looked to have won it with a slap shot and Viewmont rushed the ice, but the refs didn't see the puck cross below the bar.
"At the time I was really made about, but we won, so I don't really care now. I thought it went in, but they called it different," said Alex Barrus.
Nine seconds later, there was mad rush to the Miners' net and Danton Hinerman became the hero with Viewmont's championship-winning goal.
"We've talked about it all year, the last goal of the game's not going to be something pretty," said Hinerman. "It's going to be a hard, get it on net and grind it out type of goal."
And that it was.
"In the end, Park City was] so good. We threw everything we had at them," said Roger Barrus.
Beaten, battered, bruised, and tired, the Vikings will now have a new banner to raise next to "1978."
"I can't believe they did it! It's so awesome," said Roger Barrus.
