An 18-year-old Brigham Young University long-boarder was in critical condition Thursday after police said she was struck by a car while crossing a Provo street.

Lt. Mathew Siufanua said the boarder was riding southbound along a sidewalk on University Avenue about 6:20 p.m. Wednesday night when a witness reported she tried to cross in the crosswalk at Canyon Road.

Siufanua said the witness said it appeared the woman, who was wearing earphones, was trying to race a northbound car that had the right-of-way.

She was struck by the car, which immediately stopped.

Siufanua said investigators determined the crash was "a very, very unfortunate accident."

The teen, who attends BYU, was not wearing a helmet.
