An attorney who represents the Salt Lake City Police Department has been arrested on suspicion of drug crimes.

James Wesley Robinson was booked into jail early Wednesday on suspicion of possessing marijuana, cocaine and drug paraphernalia as well as a weapons violation.

According to jail documents, officers found a “small amount” of cocaine and a “large quantity” of marijuana along with scales and “numerous” marijuana pipes and water bongs in Robinson’s Sugar House residence. They also found large sums of cash and four firearms; jail booking documents indicate Robinson was restricted from weapons possession. Court documents did not immediately show why Robinson would be considered a restricted person.

Two other household members were arrested in the same investigation.

Robinson represents the police department in civil matters, said Art Raymond, spokesman for Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker.

An online profile indicates Robinson has worked for Salt Lake City since 2000 and previously worked as an assistant attorney general at the state A.G.’s office.

Jail documents indicate Salt Lake City police arrested Robinson; however, dispatchers say another agency handled the arrest.

Raymond said he was not sure who the arresting agency was; he said he learned of the arrest Wednesday afternoon.
