Trey Burke named West's top rookie for January
Trey Burke has been named the West's top rookie for a second straight month. While the point guard's production was down some in January, Burke still topped Sacramento's Ben McLemore, Oklahoma City's Steven Adams and L.A.'s Ryan Kelly for the Western Conference Rookie of the Month honor.Burke is the first Jazz rookie to win the monthly award twice. Previously, Karl Malone was named Rookie of the Month in December 1985.
In January, Burke, who will participate in this month's Rising Stars Challenge during the All-Star break, led all rookies in assists at 6.8 a game and was third among rookies in scoring at 11.8 points.
Philadelphia point guard Michael Carter-Williams was named the East's best rookie for January.Via Jazz PR, here are some of Burke's highlights from the month:January 13 vs. Denver: Posted 18 points and eight assists in a 118-103 win over the Nuggets.January 15 at San Antonio: Recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 assists in a 105-109 loss to the Spurs.January 17 at Detroit: Posted 20 points, 12 assists, three rebounds and two steals in a 110-89 victory over the Pistons in his first game back in the state of Michigan.January 25 vs. Washington: Contributed 12 points on four-of-five shooting from distance, eight assists and three rebounds in a 104-101 win over the Wizards.Burke's numbers have been down of late; he's only hit double-digit scoring once in his last seven games. But given the lackluster competition in the West and Burke's heavy role with the rebuilding Jazz, Burke has a very good chance at making it three in a row. Aaron Falk
