Grade • A

DVD • Even on a small screen, the grandeur of "Gravity" cannot be denied.

Director Alfonso Cuarón pulls out all the technical stops in this visually stunning tale of an outer-space mission gone wrong that it feels like you're actually in orbit with the two astronauts, first-timer Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) and seasoned astronaut Matt Kowalski (George Clooney), fighting for survival.

But it's a human-scale drama, as Kowalski sizes up the situation and Stone uses her wits and her guts to figure out a way to get back to Earth safely.

Bullock's performance, gritty and real, keeps Cuarón's wondrous film grounded. —
