Sandy • Alta’s boys’ basketball team may have had an edge in experience over Bingham on Tuesday night and the Hawks made sure it stayed on the floor nearly the whole time, primarily in the form of seniors Zach Rollins and Trevor Hill.
For Hill, that meant playing through a slightly sprained ankle suffered early in the Region 3 contest as the Hawks beat Bingham 58-52.
Hill finished with 17 points while Rollins led all players with 18.
“[Hill] turned it a little bit, but he fought through it and stayed in there. We need him out there,” said Rollins, who said he actually went to the bench during the proceedings — despite all appearances.
“Oh yeah. I subbed out once,” he said. “About 30 seconds at the end of the third.”
It was Rollins’ off-balance 3-pointer that foiled the Miners’ initial goal of being ahead at the end of the first quarter. Bingham (7-8, 2-2) took a 10-9 lead on a bucket by Yoeli Childs, who led his squad with 13 points, but that would be the Miners’ last lead when Rollins swished his trey at the buzzer.
“They’re a good team with a lot of experience. Our goal was to win that first quarter,” Bingham coach Jake Schroeder said.
Alta (16-1, 4-0) got timely threes from Rollins at two 3s junctures as well: Once in the second quarter when the Hawks led 21-19 and then at the midway point of the fourth period when his 3-pointer pushed the advantage to 48-38. As for Hill, despite being hampered by his ankle, his points came through mid-range jumpers and drives into the paint.
Until Landon Albrecht, who finished with 13 points, began to score regularly in the fourth quarter, almost all of the Hawks points came from Hill and Rollins.
That point wasn’t one that was a favorable one, as far as Alta coach Frank Barker was concerned.
“We just weren’t moving, I didn’t think offensively like we’re supposed to do,” said Barker, whose team hasn’t lost to a Utah opponent this season. “We just need to figure ourselves out.”
“We haven’t been playing to our potential,” said Rollins, echoing his coach’s opinion. “We haven’t figured it out, but we will.”
