State colleges: Streaking Utah Valley beats Chicago State, 62-55

Orem, Utah • Holton Hunsaker scored 13 points and Utah Valley defeated Chicago State 62-55 for its sixth straight Western Athletic Conference win on Saturday night.

Zach Nelson and Keawe Enos added 10 points each for the Wolverines, and Ben Aird finished with 11. Nelson and Aird combined for 24 rebounds (12 each) to add to the team's 42 total.

The Wolverines (12-7, 6-0) led by 13 points with 4:43 to go, but allowed the Cougars a 13-2 run that put them within two, 56-54, with 1:12 remaining. Hunsaker and Hayes Garrity shot a combined 6 of 6 on their free throws in the remaining minute to keep Utah Valley ahead.

Clarke Rosenberg scored 19 points, and Matt Ross added 13 along with 11 rebounds for the Cougars (9-11, 4-2). Ross' seven straight Chicago State points put the Cougars within two in the final minute.

Portland State 67, Southern Utah 64 • In Portland, Ore., the Vikings beat the Thunderbirds on Marcus Hall's late 3-pointer. Jaren Jeffery and McKay Anderson each scored 12 points for SUU (1-16, 0-8 Big Sky).

Southern Idaho 79, SLCC 76 • De'Sean Parsons scored a game-high 23 points for Salt Lake Community College, but the Bruins (19-4, 6-2 SWAC) saw their five-game winning streak snapped as they lost at home for the first time this season. The Golden Eagles improved to 22-2 and 8-1.

Women's basketball

BYU 61, Santa Clara 44 • In Provo, Morgan Bailey matched her career high with 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Cougars won the West Coast Conference game. Kim Beeston scored 12 points, and Ashley Garfield grabbed 13 rebounds for BYU (16-4, 6-3).

Santa Clara (7-13, 3-6) jumped out to an 8-3 lead and stayed ahead until Garfield scored on a putback to give the Cougars a 15-13 edge with 9 minutes remaining in the first half.

San Diego State 88, Utah State 72 • In San Diego, USU's Jennifer Schlott scored a game-high 25 points, but the Aggies (8-10, 2-5 Mountain West) couldn't rally from a 47-27 halftime deficit.

Utah Valley 72, Chicago State 46 • In Chicago, Rebecca MaWhinney scored 15 points to lead the Wolverines to their first-ever Western Athletic Conference victory.

Southern Utah 62, Eastern Washington 61 • In Cedar City, the Eagles missed on a last-second shot, and the Thunderbirds held on for the Big Sky Conference win. Hailey Mandelko scored 15 points for SUU (11-6, 5-3).

SLCC 67, College of Southern Idaho 60 • Cassidy Fraughton had 23 points and 13 rebounds in leading Salt Lake Community College (19-4, 8-0 SWAC) to its 14th straight victory. Bella Swan added 14 points off the bench for the Bruins.
