Salt Lake City police can thank stalled commuter traffic for finally catching up with and arresting two people in a stolen car.

Police said an officer initially spotted the vehicle about 8 a.m. Thursday near 200 South and 1000 West and attempted to pull it over, but the suspects sped away. Moments later, the vehicle was located again, and once more drove off, with police opting not to endanger the public with a pursuit.

However, when the car got stuck in traffic a short time later while exiting Interstate 15 at the 400 South off-ramp, police spotted it again and moved in, taking a 26-year-old male driver and his 22-year-old female passenger into custody.

Both of the suspects were booked into Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of auto theft and fleeing police.
