We signed on for the Summit County solar panel program. We received Utah tax write-offs. It cost us about $1,000 per panel, but we feel pleased to have done it.

A number of states, including Utah, are now receiving pressure from utility companies to increase charges to solar users (“Rocky Mountain Power requests 4% rate hike,” Tribune, Jan. 6). I get it. Everyone wants to make more money and consume more than they did last year. We all have cellphones, smartphones, tablets, computers, big-screen TVs, and this power has to come from somewhere. The sad reality is that there are too many of us now depleting the Earth’s resources.

All of us should tighten our consumptive belts. I don’t think we can wait for our elected leaders to move us in that direction.

I am not worried about Mother Nature. She will survive, even if we do not. We are currently losing species at an alarming rate. If we can’t learn from our past mistakes, we will be join them on that list at some point. Write a letter to your Congress person. Plant a tree or a garden. It will all help if we all do something to heal our environment.
