Wednesday wine dinners at Alta

The Shallow Shaft Restaurant will kick off its winter wine series with dinner featuring the cabernet sauvignon and sauvignon blanc wines from Napa Valley's Honig vineyard.

Cost • $45 for dinner; wine pairings are an additional $45.

Salt Lake Culinary Center offers classes

Three classes are scheduled this week at the Salt Lake Culinary Center (formerly Viking Cooking School), 2233 S. 300 East.

Fondue and Wine Party • Thursday, Jan. 9, 6 p.m.; $99 per person.

Dinner by Candlelight • Friday, Jan. 10, 6 p.m.; $218 per couple

Girls Night Out: Divine Dinner • Friday, Jan. 10, 6 p.m. $99 per person.

Anniversary specials at Spaghetti Factory

The Old Spaghetti Factory restaurant, which opened in Portland, Ore., in 1969, will celebrate its 45th anniversary by rolling back prices on popular pasta meals. On Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 13 and 14 and Jan. 20 and 21, anniversary meals will be available for $4 and $5. They will include bread, salad or soup, spaghetti entrée and dessert. Spaghetti choices include marinara, meat, mushroom or clam sauce, mizithra cheese or two-sauce combination. The specials are available at lunch and dinner to dine-in customers only. In Utah, The Old Spaghetti Factory has locations in Salt Lake City, Taylorsville and Orem.

Noodles & Co. to open in West Valley

Noodles & Company will open its 13th Utah location in West Valley City on Monday, Jan. 13. The 2,676-square-foot building seats 65 inside and 30 on its outdoor patio. Guest can receive news and offers about grand opening and VIP events by signing up at noodles.com or visiting Facebook and Twitter.

Restaurants offer light fare in 2014

For those who are looking to eat lighter in 2014, Del Taco and Pie Five Pizza have recently introduced lighter menu options.

Del Taco • The Mexican fast-food chain is now serving tacos, made with lean, seasoned ground turkey. They have 33 percent less fat than the chain's seasoned beef and 150 calories.

Pie Five Pizza • The new "skinny pie" is a thin-crust pizza topped with marinara, chicken, mozzarella and provolone cheese blend, red onion, red and green peppers. The entire 9-inch pizza contains fewer than 500 calories. Pie Five Pizza has locations in Holladay and Sandy.
