Roy • Layton forward Jarriesse Blackmon took the ball to the hole on a fast break in the early moments of the game. He rose into the air, then crumpled, grabbing his leg as he slid on his back near the baseline. He exited the game with a grimace, limping off with the help of two trainers.
Perhaps the Lancers still would have beaten Roy had the junior forward not re-entered the game. But when he strode back onto the floor late in the first quarter, it proved to be the end for the Royals, though that of course wouldnt become clear until the final minutes.
Blackmon’s 20 points, combined with guard play that forced several mistakes, were enough for the Lancers to keep the Royals at arm’s length throughout the second half in a 64-52 win Friday evening.
For Blackmon, who speaks often of proving himself, Friday presented a prime opportunity. He went head-to-head with one of the state’s best players, Roy forward Brekkott Chapman, and came out on top. Chapman finished with 15 points after spending much of the first half in foul trouble.
“Brekkott is an amazing player, and who doesnt want to come out here against the best player in the state, probably? Blackmon said. ... Getting the honors to guard him tonight was a big honor, and I wanted to make my seniors proud.
Layton also got splendid play from guards Malcom Petty and Julian Blackmon. After the Lancers fell behind 9-0, Petty and Blackmon forced a barrage of Royals turnovers, leading to transition scores. By the end of the first half, the game was in Layton control.
“They’re gonna be the reason why we win region, Jarriesse Blackmon said of the guards. They’re going to be the reason why were going to go to state
Though it was just a preseason game, the win was not insignificant for the Lancers. Coming off a disappointing performance at the Riverton Holiday Tournament, the Lancers came in knowing the could prove to be a steadying force heading into league play.
“I just really feel like the way we played in that tournament wasn’t really Layton High basketball, Blackmon said. It wasn’t the basketball we’ve been playing most of the season. During that tournament, there were times that we slipped. I’m just glad we were able to get ourselves together for this game.
