A Salt Lake City man was in serious condition after being shot by a police officer Friday evening.

Salt Lake City police were called to an apartment complex at 164 S. 900 West on a report of a man "experiencing a mental health crisis" who was threatening to burn down his home, according to a police news release.

When officers arrived at his home, shortly after 11 p.m., they attempted to contact the man, but he would not come outside. The officers then began smelling natural gas, so they entered the apartment, according to police.

The man — who was not identified by police on Saturday morning — lunged at one of the officers with what they believed was a knife.

An officer fired once and hit the man, who was transported to a local hospital. Police said he is expected to recover from his wounds.

The officer was placed on administrative leave pending reviews of the shooting by the Salt Lake City police and the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office.
