Someone Still Loves You

Boris Yeltsin

Show of the week • The indie-pop trio Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin — vocalist/guitarist Philip Dickey, lead guitarist Will Knauer and bassist/drummer Jonathan James — took a detour on their way to recording the band's fourth album, "Fly by Wire." The Boris Yeltsin Foundation, named for the late Russian president from whom the band also takes its moniker, invited the band to Russia in January. The band (known as SSLYBY for short) met Yeltsin's close friends and his personal translator, who gave the band seven bottles of expensive Russian vodka. The U.S. consulate named the band cultural ambassadors for a day, and the band performed at an elementary school. The band's visit to Kilby Court comes toward the end of its current tour (with opening act Army Navy), SSLYBY's first since the amicable departure of founding member John Robert Cardwell. One wonders what kind of invite SSLYBY will snag from the opening song on "Fly By Wire," a ditty with the title "Harrison Ford." Maybe a ride on the Millennium Falcon?
