The Chiefs acquired former Ute quarterback Alex Smith for a couple of draft picks in the offseason. This week, a football fan traded her wedding ring to watch him play.
According to The Kansas City Star, the woman, who asked to remain anonymous, offered up her wedding ring on Craigslist in exchange for tickets to the Chiefs-Broncos game in Kansas City on Dec. 1.
She found a taker, 49-year-old Rusty Jones, and the two parties exchanged the ring, valued at $2,800, for four section 123 tickets to the Chiefs-Broncos game and two tickets to the Chiefs-Chargers game next week.
“It’s official! I have tickets to the game!!!” the woman said in an email to several Kansas City news outlets. “We met at a jewelry store so they could verify the ring was real and matched the appraisal I had provided him.”
An uproar was raised that the woman would prioritize watching the undefeated Chiefs over her wedding band, but just as Smith’s relationship with the San Franciso 49ers is over, so is the marriage that involved that ring.
The Star reported that the ring was “a round brilliant-cut diamond — .45 carats — set in a white gold setting that contains 20 more small round diamonds weighing .50 carats with a matching wedding band has 10 more small diamonds with a weight of .25 carats.”
Jones, a Chiefs season ticket holder since 1993, will reportedly use it to propose to his girlfriend on Sunday when the Chiefs travel to take on the Peyton Manning-led Broncos in Denver.
Nine months into the Smith trade and nine wins later, it looks like the Chiefs were winners in trading for a new quarterback.
This trade isn’t looking too bad either.
