Police say a burglar broke into a southwest Salt Lake City home and not only ended up empty-handed, but in the hospital in critical condition.

Salt Lake City police Detective Dennis McGowan said the 20-year-old suspect smashed a window to enter the home, at 553 S. 1000 West, about 6 a.m. Thursday. Then, things went very bad for him.

Adult residents of the home, hearing the shattered glass and finding the suspect inside with an arm profusely bleeding, called 911.

In entering the house through the broken window, the suspect apparently cut an artery in his arm. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but had been stabilized by Friday and was expected to recover.

McGowan said the suspect would be arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of burglary once doctors deem him ready for release.
