Utah basketball: Utes officially land two four-star recruits
One was nationally coveted, a local kid whom the entire Pac-12 wanted. One enrolled in school early and is a partial qualifier. The third hails from Idaho and has drawn comparisons to Andre Miller, the greatest point guard in the program's history.
Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak feels like he has the versatility, depth and star power to compete for Pac-12 titles in the near future with his recruiting class of Brekkott Chapman, Kyle Kuzma and Isaiah Wright.
"In Brekkott and Kyle, we have two versatile 6-foot-9 forwards who can play multiple positions, shoot the ball and are good athletes," Krystkowiak said. "Isaiah is someone we recruited for a long time.
"He's a terrific passer and he gets everyone involved. He's a big point guard and he's someone who can come in and run our offense. This is a class that we're very happy with."
Analyst Jerry Meyer of 24/7 recruiting ranked the class fourth overall in the Pac-12 behind USC, Arizona and Stanford since Kuzma and Chapman both earned four-star designations. Chapman is ranked among the top 100 recruits in the country by every major scouting service. He stars at Roy High and is considered the best prospect in the state, with Lone Peak and BYU signee TJ Haws close behind. Kuzma had a great summer and became a top 150 recruit. Wright is a three-star recruit who led his high school to a state title last winter.
Chapman and Kuzma are expected to challenge for playing time immediately. Wright will back-up Delon Wright and Brandon Taylor for a season before the opportunity to challenge for extended time. All three are considered big for their positions.
"We've closed the talent gap between us and the rest of the league," Krystkowiak said. "Now we have to coach the talent. When a guy is on the brink, he kind of brings a needed toughness to survive. Now that we have some talent, we have to make sure they play hard enough for us to win."
