FM100 starts blasting the Christmas music

The folks at FM100 couldn’t stay away from the mistletoe forever.

Last Friday, in The Cricket column, yours truly opined about the headlong rush by retailers and other commercial entities to start the Christmas season as soon as the Halloween candy is shoved to the clearance racks.

In the column, The Cricket praised Salt Lake City radion station FM100 (KSFI-FM) for its restraint in not flipping the switch on its wall-to-wall holiday music. Last year, both FM100 and rival KOSY-FM started cranking out the carols on Nov. 2.

This year, without KOSY as competition (the station switched to a classic-rock format on Dec. 21), FM100 — part of Deseret Media Corp., which is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — apparently felt less pressure to start the Christmas tunes so early.

As of today, though, the holiday music is flowing from FM100’s airwaves — and will continue through Dec. 25, with a 100-hour commercial-free marathon starting on Dec. 21.
