Over the weekend The Tribune published a story about the blurred lines between civic and religious authority in the polygamous Short Creek area.
The story referenced a pair of letters from George M. Allred, who claims to be the mayor of the community. Those letters are embedded above.
The letters mostly speak for themselves but, as I wrote in Sunday’s story, they’re probably the most explicit and compelling evidence that the city leaders in Colorado City, Ariz., and Hildale, Utah, defer to and enforce the edicts of religious leaders including Warren Jeffs.
The letters were filed as part of a Department of Justice lawsuit alleging discrimination against the non-FLDS Cooke family, who live in the Short Creek area. The letters also come at the end of a declaration from Willie Jessop — a former FLDS security official who left the church and most recently purchased a compound built for Jeffs.
Jessop’s declaration also is included in the document above. If you want to skip straight to the letters, scroll to the end.
And also check out the other story from this weekend about a massive new batch of surveillance images that were recently turned in to the county attorney. I’ve also included a few of those photos in the gallery to the left.
