New photos offer glimpse into FLDS security

We've reported before on the unusual surveillance network in Colorado City, Ariz., and Hildale, Utah. But during a recent trip to southern Utah, photographer Trent Nelson and I saw that network from an entirely new vantage point: that of someone apparently spying on the community.

That vantage point comes from a series of photos we obtained during our visit. The photos, which have somewhat mysterious origins, seem to have been mostly shot from inside a vehicle in southern Utah and document an array of people and activities in Short Creek — and beyond. The photos were shot from behind tinted glass or other obstructions — indicating that they were shot clandestinely without the knowledge of the subjects. And the focus of the images seems to be the FLDS church.

I've included one of the photos with this blog post. However, we'll have a more in-depth look at these images in Sunday's newspaper, along with a story on some fascinating evidence in a polygamy-related lawsuit. Make sure to check back then.
