SUV plows through concrete wall at I-215/I-80 interchange
An out-of-control SUV crashed after plowing through a concrete barrier wall while attempting to take a ramp from Interstate 215 to Interstate 80 in Salt Lake City Monday morning.
Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Jalaine Hawkes said the 49-year-old woman driving the 1998 Chevrolet Tahoe was taken to the hospital for treatment of what initially were believed to be minor neck and back injuries.
The crash occurred about 5:45 a.m. Witnesses said the woman was traveling northbound on I-215 and lost control when she attempted to make a lane change to get onto eastbound I-80. The SUV burst through the concrete barrier and a fence before sliding down an embankment and coming to rest near some Union Pacific Railroad tracks.
Hawkes said excessive speed and possibly underinflated tires were thought to have been factors in the accident, which closed down one traffic lane through the scene for more than two hours.
The crash investigation was ongoing.
