DVD review: The crazy case of 'War of the Worlds'

DVD • PBS' "American Experience" does a good job of recalling the "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast that aired 75 years ago, which surely ranks as one of the strangest media events in our history.

It's almost unfathomable that anyone, let alone thousands of people, could have listened to Orson Welles' radio play adaptation of H.G. Wells' classic sci-fi novel and actually believed that Martians had invaded.

This hourlong documentary (which will be released Tuesday, the same day it airs on PBS/Ch. 7 at 8 p.m.) puts the whole thing in historical context, although the dramatizations of the people who wrote some of the thousands of letters sent to Welles are sort of silly. —
