Sandy • From the same family as Curry in a Hurry and Curry Fried Chicken, Pizza in a Hurry comes from an impressive food pedigree. Unfortunately, this third venture from the Nisar family lacks culinary focus, serving two diverse sets of diners.

In the daytime, Pizza in a Hurry’s primary clientele are students from nearby Jordan High School flocking to the $5 deal that includes two slices of cheese, pepperoni, Hawaiian or vegetable pizza. Ready-to-serve, the large slices are quickly warmed in the oven and pizza in a hurry is definitely what they get. A slice of the Hawaiian ($2.99) was certainly a step up from high school cafeteria fare but nothing more memorable than canned pineapple and diced ham.

High school antics from the kids and loud Bollywood music inside the restaurant made for a less-than-ideal lunch spot for anyone over age 16—unless you’re interested in taking a turn at the vintage Frogger arcade game in the corner while you wait for your order. The high-schoolers did seem to enjoy the décor, which was primarily The Pie-inspired framed fake brick wall segments that they could sign with markers.

At night, takeout orders for more adventurous (and adult) pizza palettes are top of the menu. Pizza in a Hurry serves turkey pepperoni and ham to conform with halal guidelines of no pork. And while I’m a lover of porcine products, I found nothing wrong with the turkey creations in either presentation or taste.

The standout pizza here is the Nisar family’s signature thandoori chicken pizza served in their home since they moved from New Jersey to Salt Lake City in the late 1990s. Loaded with juicy thandoori chicken pieces and interspersed with sauteed red onions and crunchy green peppers, the generous mozzerella and marinara sauce all meld together for a memorable Indian/American taste experience. It comes in 14- 18- and 26-inch sizes for $14.99, $19.99, and $39.99, respectively.

Housemade dough, fresh vegetables and halal meats also are plentiful on the cheeseburger pizza made with simple ground beef, onions and tomatoes ($13.99, $18.99, $34.99). The loaded combination features pepperoni, ground beef, red onions, fresh mushrooms and crunchy green peppers ($14.99, $18.99, $32.99).

Want to kick it up a notch? Order the only non-red sauce pizza on the menu—shrimp with garlic sauce and vegetables. ($17.99, $21.99, $40.99). If you like it hot, try the spicy habanero covered with the hot pepper sauce then topped with seasoned ground beef, onions, fresh mushrooms and jalapenos. ($15.99, $19.99, $36.99).

In typical pizza joint fashion, you’ll find forgettable sides ranging from fairly rubbery chicken wings in a lackluster buffalo or super spicy habanero sauces ($6 for 6 or $12 for 12); and the nearly inedible bite-size pizza dough squares (“knots”) in garlic ($2.99), cheese or cinnamon (both $3.99). There’s a side salad ($2.99) of which they had none. Libations include fountain soft drinks and bottled water.

Full-size pizzas are available in half-and-half orders so branch out and try some of Pizza in a Hurry’s more diverse creations if you’re looking for something outside the normal south valley takeout food options.
