| Layton Police photo Police say this is the image of a suspect in the latest of a series of Davis County convenience store robberies.

Police believe they have gotten a big break in trying to halt to a series of armed robberies targeting Davis County gas station convenience stores.

The suspect’s face was captured Wednesday morning by a video security camera during a robbery at the Sinclair store, 1508 N. Highway 89, in Layton.

Layton police Lt. Shawn Horton said the man came into the store about 1 a.m., selected a soft drink and took it to the counter. When the clerk rang up the sale and opened the cash register till, the suspect demanded money.

Unlike earlier and similar holdups in Bountiful and Layton earlier this week, the clerk initially refused and attempted to call 911. The suspect attacked the clerk, the two fought briefly and then the suspect pulled a knife.

As the clerk backed away, the suspect — whose hat and hood had come loose to show his face — grabbed cash from the till and ran out of the store.

Horton said the suspect’s description, claims of having a handgun and clothing — a dark hooded sweat shirt and dark hat that covered his face — match those the perpetrator of holdups of a Tesoro and another Sinclair station in Bountiful and Layton, respectively, Tuesday morning.

Late Tuesday, police had arrested a 33-year-old man, who was a former employee of the first Sinclair station, in connection with that holdup. It was undetermined what, if any connection, the arrested man may have to the still-at-large suspect.
