Buses are unreliable, fare too costly
I am an Avenues resident who takes the bus to work downtown every day in an effort to help reduce the pollution that Salt Lake suffers so tremendously each winter. The fare does not save much money; driving might cost less.
Recently I went out at 8:15 a.m. to catch my 8:19 Route 3 bus. At 8:40 a.m., when the bus still hadn't come, I called UTA. The dispatch person informed me that the bus was still in Research Park and would be there "momentarily." When I asked to issue a formal complaint, I was put on hold for another 15 minutes, and still no bus. The helpful operator discovered that my bus had in fact been 15 minutes early. This is not the first or even third time I have had such an experience. As a result I was 40 minutes late to work.
If someone like me who goes out of her way to use the public transit system is treated so poorly, how will we ever convince people to step out of their comfortable cars and onto a bus?
