Two downtown Salt Lake City restaurants may look as if they are closed, but their owners say they are simply undergoing remodeling and repairs.
Zy Food Wine and Cheese, at 268 S. State St., closed this weekend for a remodel, Chef/owner Matthew Lake said Monday.
Lake is hoping to make a 72-hour turn-around and reopen later this week as a new Mexican restaurant, called Alamexo.
It’s a coming home of sorts for Lake who was the chef at Rosa Mexicano in New York City for several years.
“It’s just a change, not a closure,” he said in a telephone interview, with construction equipment blaring in the background. “ We’ll offer the same level of service with a new menu.”
A few weeks ago, Vivace, 308 W. 300 South, closed for repairs. However, a reopening date is still uncertain as the 12-foot grill — which served as the centerpiece of the restaurant — undergoes a major repair.
Owner Ken Milo said the grill was not built with the high-tempered steel necessary to handle the intense flames used in cooking. Basically, “the bottom fell out.”
While it’s a serious setback for the restaurant, he said, “we intend to reopen.”
Even if the grill is not repaired soon, the space will be open for holiday parties, said Milo, owner of the Cucina Restaurant group that also owns Cucina Toscana and Caterina in Sugar House.
In other news, Milo said the bistro at Caterina is closed for the season. However, the restaurant is available during the winter for holiday parties and events.
