Some 20,000 SKI magazine readers have given Utah’s ski resorts high marks for the publication’s 2014 Reader Resort Survey for western ski areas.
Park City’s three resorts all finished in the top 10 overall rankings with Deer Valley ranked behind Jackson Hole as the second-best western resort, Park City Mountain Resort earning the fifth spot and The Canyons ranking 10th for the second year in a row.
Snowbird was ranked 17th, Alta 27th, Solitude 28th, Snowbasin 29th and Brighton 30th in the overall results.
Ski Utah spokesperson Susie English said the fact that this is a reader survey gives it more credibility.
“For us, this is the industry measure of what our resorts are doing,” she said. “Resorts are ranked by readers of SKI magazine. It’s not a subjective opinion about what the magazine thinks…It is a pretty cool testament to reinforce what are resorts are doing.”
The magazine also ranks 20 individual categories. Utah resorts placed first in 12 of those.
Alta, Snowbird, Solitude and Brighton were ranked in the top 10 in the snow category, while seven of Utah’s resorts hit the top 10 in the ease of access rating. Six Utah resorts earned top 10 ratings in weather.
Deer Valley was ranked number one five years in a row, dropping to number two behind Whistler Blackcomb in 2013 and staying there again this year.
“It’s a pretty amazing thing they have managed to do,” said English about Deer Valley’s high ranking. “They keep their visitors happy with amenities, accessibility, weather and snow.”
Deer Valley earned number one marks in the grooming, service, on-mountain food, dining and family programs portions of the survey.
Park City officials were especially pleased to have the area’s three resorts in the top 10.
“Nowhere else in North America can one town claim three of the top 10 resorts,” said Bill Malone, President and CEO of the Park City Chamber & Visitors Bureau.
Ski Utah President Nathan Rafferty also celebrated the rankings.
“Utah’s resorts are committed to enhancing our natural strengths as a destination year after year,” he said. “These rankings reflect the opinions of ski resort consumers nationwide, and the high rankings reinforce that our efforts are improving the Utah Ski experience. We are thrilled to see Utah’s resorts ranked so highly among skiers across the nation.”
