An 11-month-old Layton girl suffering from “shaken baby syndrome” spent Friday in an induced coma.
Layton Lt. Shawn Horton said the girl was “not doing well” after her mother’s boyfriend, a 25-year-old Layton man, shook her and threw her on a bed Tuesday. Doctors were keeping her in a chemically induced coma in an attempt to help her brain heal.
Layton detectives determined that the mother’s boyfriend was at home with the baby when the injuries occurred. The mother was at work.
Through a combination of evidence and statements from the man, detectives determined he had become frustrated with the baby’s crying, shook her and threw her on the bed. The man then left the home with the baby, picked up his girlfriend at work and they went to the hospital.
The man was arrested following the incident, though he subsequently bailed out of jail. Horton said county attorneys are still screening charges against the man.
