Here’s what’s happening over the weekend in pop culture:

• So we can all agree that Miley Cyrus’ gyrating performance at the MTV Video Music Awards was awful. But here’s a fascinating take from Jody Rosen: “The shock that Cyrus was peddling wasn’t sex. It was all about race.” [Vulture]

• Chadwick Boseman, who portrayed baseball legend Jackie Robinson in “42,” soon will be playing another icon — the hardest working man in show business, the Godfather of Soul, James Brown — in a biopic to be directed by Tate Taylor (“The Help”). [The Hollywood Reporter]

• Keith Olbermann returned to TV last night, launching a new sports-talk show on ESPN2 that resembles his MSNBC and Current TV shows in format, if not in political content. And he launched it with a harsh attack on sports journalists for “making things up.” [The Huffington Post]
