Utah coaches want Travis Wilson to assert himself more as a leader this year. Apparently, the sophomore isn’t doing too bad of a job now.
Wilson was voted a captain by a vote of the players along with offensive lineman Jeremiah Tofaeono, defensive end Trevor Reilly and defensive tackle Tenny Palepoi.
The vote was a significant one considering Jordan Wynn wasn’t given the honor last year and Wilson is just a sophomore.
“It tells you what this team thinks about Travis,” Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said.
Reilly was an expected pick, considering his vocal presence in recent years.
“If you had to pick one guy to lead the entire team it would be Trevor,” Whittingham said. “We expect a big year out of him.”
Reilly is slated to start at defensive end but could also play some at linebacker, a change noted on Monday’s depth chart.
He played both positions in 2012 and indicated switching between the two positions isn’t an issue.
“I was lucky enough to have a great D-line coach in John Pease who set the ground work,” he said. “If you can get used to getting your head in there and mixing it up, thats what makes great D-linemen. I have the base to do that now.”
The Utes made few other significant changes to the depth chart. Adam Schulz is the No. 2 quarterback, a role he claimed based on his accuracy,” Whittingham said. Freshman Conner Manning will spend most of his time with the threes as he has edged ahead of Brandon Cox.
Michael Walker, a senior who has been one of the surprises of fall camp, is listed as a possible starter at strong safety along with Tyron Morris-Edwards.
Freshman receiver Dominque Hatfield is listed as Dres Anderson’s backup at receiver.
The 5-foot-10 Hatfield gives the Utes a different look than the taller receivers, Whittingham said.
“He’s fast, really fast,” Whitingham said. “He’s real competitive and picks things up for us fast.”
The Utes practiced late Monday and will practice until 9 p.m. on Wednesday so players can get accustomed to playing under the lights...Freshman quarterback Micah Thomas, who practiced some with the defense last week, is back with the offense.
