Carson, Calif. • Luis Gil lined up a shot and sent a rocket flying toward goal.

When the ball had sailed over the crossbar, referee Hilario Grajeda gave the go-ahead for Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo to take the kick.

Real Salt Lake captain Kyle Beckerman, meanwhile, disagreed — arguing that Penedo had touched the ball — and his dissent earned him a yellow card in the 57th minute of Saturday's game.

"I think we were starting to get the momentum [back] at 1-1," Beckerman said after the 4-2 defeat. "It seemed to be a corner kick, instead it's a goal kick and the next thing you know they scored. Then I think we got stretched, and Keane will make you pay on any mistake."

The call may have cost RSL in more ways than one. The card was Beckerman's fifth this season, so the Salt Lake captain will be suspended for Wednesday's game in Portland.

"It's a long season," Beckerman said. "It's one out of 34 and it's just five yellow cards. The guys will be all right. We've got a lot of soccer to play."

And the captain stands by his view of the referee's call.

"Luis hit a great shot, keeper made a great save," he said. "It looked like momentum was going our way. ... You check, watch the replay. It seemed pretty obvious."
