New York • The Colorado Rockies have purchased the contract of right-hander Jeff Manship from Triple-A Colorado Springs and are giving him a start in place of injured righty Tyler Chatwood.

Chatwood experienced elbow inflammation after having a bullpen session Tuesday to test a bothersome hamstring. The Rockies placed him on the disabled list following Wednesday night's loss to the Mets.

The 24-year-old Chatwood missed a start in June because of soreness in his triceps tendon. And Manager Walt Weiss said this injury could be related.

On Thursday, Manship will be making his first big league start since May 1, 2010, for Minnesota.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Manship, the Rockies recalled lefty Christian Friedrich from Colorado Springs and placed him on the 60-day disabled list with lower back inflammation.
