The alternative country band Son Volt just released its seventh studio album,“Honky Tonk,” an exploration of the inspirations that Jay Farrar has used ever since he was a founding member of alt-country pioneers Uncle Tupelo. Uncle Tupelo, of course, splintered, with Farrar going on to create Son Volt while Jeff Tweedy went on to found Wilco. Son Volt has remained the most “country” of those two bands, and when you ponder who has one of the greater voices in popular music, look no further than Farrar’s distinctive baritone.
