Utah soccer coach will go to trial for alleged sex abuse of teen player
Farmington • The last time the teen girl said she had sex with 42-year-old Steven Dale Green, she had gone to his home to break off the two-year relationship that began when she was 13.
"I was done and I didn't want to do that anymore," the now-17-year-old testified in 2nd District Court on Wednesday. "I told him that I just wanted him to be 'my dad' again and I didn't want any of that other stuff, and he said, 'Too bad. I'm not going to miss you, I'm only going to miss the sex.' So I had sex with him again because I felt like that was the only option because I wasn't ready to lose another father figure."
The teen testified that Green, of Bountiful, whom she met playing in a soccer club when she was 12-years-old, had become a father figure to her, helping her with her math homework and coaching her in soccer.
But quickly, their relationship turned sexual: two weeks after they shared their first kiss at Green's home, they had sexual intercourse for the first time in the back of his car near the Bountiful "B" that overlooks the city.
Green was charged in 2nd District Court with 14 first-degree felonies, including rape, rape of a child, object rape of a child, aggravated sexual abuse of a child and forcible sodomy.
Following a Wednesday preliminary hearing, Judge David Connors ordered Green to stand trial on 13 of the counts. After hearing testimony from the alleged victim, Connors did not find evidence to support the allegation of object rape of a child.
Green will appear in court again for a scheduling hearing on Aug. 20.
Defense attorney Greg Law asked Wednesday that the enhanced first-degree felony "aggravated" charges against Green for allegedly occupying a position of trust in connection to the girl should be reduced to second-degree felonies. Law argued that Green had been the girl's coach when she was 12-years-old, but that he was no longer coaching her the following year when the alleged sexual relationship began.
Deputy Davis County Attorney Cristina Ortega countered that the first-degree felonies should stand because the coaching relationship provided Green a gateway to the later sexual encounters.
According to court documents, Green allegedly began having sex with the girl in 2008. The teen testified the two had sex almost daily from 2008-2011, with most of the sexual encounters taking place at Green's home. Oftentimes, the teen would skip school so the two could have sex while Green's wife was at work and his children were in school, she testified.
The two would often have sex in an upstairs loft, the girl testified, and on several occasions they had intercourse on Green's kitchen island, which the girl said Green referred to as his "altar of sin."
The teen testified that the police were notified of the alleged affair after her grandmother found a condom in her room and asked about her sexual history. She told her grandmother that she lost her virginity at 13, she testified, then eventually told her about Green. The girl's family notified police, and Green was arrested in February by Bountiful police at the South Davis Recreation Center.
