Here's what's happening today in pop culture:

• An MPAA arbitration panel has ruled that The Weinstein Company must change the title of Lee Daniels' upcoming White House drama “The Butler.” The strange reasoning is that TWC didn't register the title and Warner Bros. has laid claim to it, because it's the same title as a 1916 short comedy. TWC, which already has trailers and posters up for the Aug. 16 release, is threatening to sue. [Variety]

• Right-wing media types are cheering the box-office failure of “White House Down,” which they claim is loaded with liberal propaganda because it involves a black president standing up to militia types. [The Huffington Post]

• Alfonso Cuaron's outer-space drama “Gravity” will open the Venice Film Festival. [The Hollywood Reporter]
