Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff performs Tuesday, June 26, at Red Butte Garden.

Jimmy Cliff is looking forward and looking back.

The reggae legend is launching a 17-date “2013 Many Rivers Crossed Tour” this fall, performing in intimate theater and club settings — including a concert on Sunday, Sept. 15, at The Depot in Salt Lake City.

Cliff’s latest album, “The KCRW Session,” is set to be released tomorrow. It features nine songs recorded live last June on the Santa Monica, Calif., public-radio station’s acclaimed show “Morning Becomes Eclectic.” That follows his 2012 album “Rebirth,” which won the Grammy for best reggae album.

The tour coincides with the 40th anniversary of the classic film “The Harder They Come,” in which Cliff starred (as a drug dealer who rises to prominence in Jamaica) and recorded the title song. The film and soundtrack album are considered landmarks, helping popularize reggae in the United States and beyond.

Tickets for Cliff’s show at The Depot are scheduled to go on sale Friday at Smith’s Tix. Tickets are $31 in advance, $36 on the day of the show.
