As a pitcher for the independent Salt Lake Trappers in 1987, John Savage was part of a team that compiled a pro baseball-record streak of 29 victories.

His UCLA baseball team is on quite a run of its own.

The Bruins are 8-0 in NCAA Tournament play, advancing to the finals of the College World Series in Omaha, Neb. The best-of-three series with Mississippi State starts Monday at 6 p.m. MDT.

UCLA (47-17) is doing it with great pitching, including a 4-1 win over North Carolina to win its bracket. The Bruins finished second to Oregon State in the Pac-12, but have shut down their postseason opponents.

Savage is in his ninth season at UCLA, following three years as UC Irvine's coach. With the Trappers, he went 2-0 in four games in 1987.
