Salt Lake County police used tear gas and the SWAT team to capture a man early Saturday who refused to come out of a Taylorsville apartment.
Members of the Unified Police Department’s SWAT team arrested a 30-year-old man after a detective and U.S. marshals tried to serve a warrant for an earlier aggravated assault charge out of Roosevelt, said UPD Lt. Justin Hoyal.
Marshals tracked the suspect to a unit at the Callaway Apartments at 3990 S. 1140 West, about 2 a.m., but the man refused to come out.
Two adults and two children in the unit were initially let out of the apartment. “They [police] tried for a couple of hours to negotiate, but he refused to come out,” Hoyal said.
SWAT was called to the scene and about a dozen apartments surrounding the unit were evacuated to the apartment clubhouse for a few hours. Tear gas was used and the suspect came out of the unit without further incident just before 6 a.m.
Details on the man’s charge of aggravated assault were unknown.
“He’s a known gang member and known to be armed,” Hoyal said, though the suspect did not have a gun with him during the incident.
