Sports briefs: Ohio St. president insults Notre Dame, Catholics
College athletics • The president of Ohio State University said Notre Dame was never invited to join the Big Ten because the university's priests are not good partners, joking that "those damn Catholics" can't be trusted, according to a recording of a meeting he attended late last year.
At the December meeting of the school's Athletic Council, Vernal, Utah native Gordon Gee also took shots at schools in the Southeastern Conference and the University of Louisville, according to the recording, obtained by The Associated Press under a public records request.
The university called the statements inappropriate and said Gee is undergoing a "remediation plan" because of the remarks.
Italian club will play MLS All-Stars
Soccer • Italian club AS Roma, led by U.S. star Michael Bradley, will play a team made up of the best players in Major League Soccer in the league's annual All-Star game on July 31.
Roma is the first Serie A club to play in the MLS All-Star game, which traditionally pits one of the top international clubs in the world against the best players in the United States.
The MLS All-Stars are 6-2-1 against international clubs.
