After leading his team to the Class 3A state title and graduating as the valedictorian of his class, Snow Canyon standout Riley Gates has been named the Gatorade Utah baseball player of the year.

Gates finished the year with a 6-4 record, a 0.83 ERA and 114 strikeouts from the mound. Also a first baseman on the team, Gates batted .446 with three home runs and 37 RBI on the year.

"Riley Gates is a tremendous kid who I have immensely enjoyed coaching the last four years," Snow Canyon coach Reed Secrist said of his ace, an Eagle Scout who graduated with a 4.0 GPA. "He's been the go-to guy whenever we need a win."

The Warriors found themselves in the one-loss bracket of the 3A tournament earlier this month. Snow Canyon beat Spanish Fork for a chance at a championship matchup with Desert Hills, a rival school that head beaten the Warriors in the three previous contests.

Snow Canyon beat Desert Hills in back-to-back games to claim the title.
