Three 8-foot high wood piles caught fire Saturday at a Salt Lake City business that uses waste wood to make wood pellets.
A passerby called Salt Lake City firefighters at 1:30 p.m. about a pile of wood debris on fire at Arbor Pellet (3268 W. 900 South), said spokesman Jasen Asay. Firefighters arrived at the business to see that the wind had spread embers from the first fire and to two others piles of wood debris.
“It went to a second alarm very quickly,” Asay said.
No one was at the business, so firefighters had to cut their way through the locked gates to reach the piles. They also had to push an abandoned car out of the way to get to one of the locks, Asay said.
But once inside, they quickly extinguished the fires, and used a small tractor to break up the piles of wood, Asay said.
Investigators ruled the cause of the fire undetermined.
