5A baseball: Bingham blasts Riverton, Miners to play for title
Orem • The saying in the Bingham Miners' dugout has been the same all season. Block out everything else. Focus on "the next 200 feet."
The end finally is in sight.
The Miners got hits from eight different players and a three-hit gem from pitcher Brennon Lund to beat region rival Riverton 11-1 in Thursday's Class 5A winners bracket final at Utah Valley University.
"There's a lot of excitement right now," said catcher Jacob Druce, who had three RBIs. "But our main focus is that we've still got one more game to play. Two hundred feet ends eventually, but right now we've got to focus on what's coming for us tomorrow."
Designated hitter Chase Tavonatti led off the bottom of the second inning with a single to center field to kick-start a Miner barrage. Bingham batted around in the inning, notching six runs on six hits to knock Riverton pitcher Jared Barton out of the game early.
Lund gave up a leadoff hit to Riverton shortstop Trevor Peterson to start the game, which eventually turned into Riverton's lone run of the game. The pitcher settled in after that, thanks in part to his team's heavy run production in the five-inning game.
"It means a lot for my team to come out and do that for me," said Lund, who went 3 for 3 with a walk from the leadoff spot. "It relaxes me a lot. We got runs early, and we weren't fighting back."
Riverton took the season series with Bingham, winning two of the three regular-season contests en route to a region championship.
"We had a better mentality today," Lund said. "We came out really strong. We wanted to play. We just want to be here, and we feel like we're ready to go."
Bingham coach Joe Sato said his team also had fortune on its side.
The hits "found some places to land today, and other days they don't," he said. "Sometimes the game rewards and you sometimes it kicks you in the teeth. Today we got a chance to get the reward part of it. It could be different tomorrow."
