In the stories from Newtown, Conn., and now Moore, Okla., we have seen teachers put their lives on the line for their students. Such stories of heroism don't surprise me — I worked around educators for more than 30 years.

But even heroism doesn't translate into more value put on teachers by Utah's Legislature. Legislators who want to put guns in teachers' hands, to put them in harm's way and make them de facto bodyguards for school kids, should put more money in their pockets, too.
