Re "Study: Salt Lake City has highest rate of gay parents in U.S." (Tribune, May 22):

It should come as no surprise that in family-friendly Utah even the gay couples are family-friendly. Still, that news must frustrate the anti-gays in Utah, who want to believe and insist that gays are perverted, hedonistic, selfish and vain. No doubt they'd identify with gay Prior Walter in "Angels in America" when he said to iconoclastic Mormon Hannah Pitt: "I wish you would be more true to your demographic profile. Life is confusing enough."

Some gays are hedonistic, selfish and vain, as are many heterosexuals. But many gays are half of a loving same-sex couple, home-bound and struggling with the common joys and pains and worries of parenthood. They're self-sacrificing, not selfish.

If you truly believe LDS Church President Harold B. Lee's statement that "The most important of the Lord's work that you will ever do will be the work you do within the walls of your own home," then gay parents should be celebrated and supported, not scorned. For if you scorn them, you wish harm for their children.
